Telemedicine Focus Group Meeting

The Arusha’s ELCT –Telemedicine project in collaboration with BUMACO Ltd under the International Institute for Communication and Development (IICD) organized the focus group meeting to share lessons learned and the degree to which telemedicine is used by different health professionals to improve health delivery services in different FBOs institutions undertaking the project.

The one day meeting was held on May 6, 2009 at Naura Springs Hotel in Arusha whereby 17, participants from FBO Institutions, CSSC, ELCT and The Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology attended the meeting.

 During the meeting different topics were highlighted like; the background of the project, user profile, user motivation for participating in the project, frequency and manner of use of services, development impact of the programme and group discussion.

 Working groups with specific tasks looked into those areas with the following results:
-    61% of users (21 and 40 years old) and 39% (41 and 60 years old)
-    67% are males and 33% females
-    78% have attained tertiary education where as 22% have secondary education
-    to learn from other users and be informed other diseases occurring
-    improve quality of service through quick consultation
-    to utilize IT as a means of improving medical services
-    reduction of the number of unnecessary referrals of patients to high centers
-    to receive accurate diagnoses for most of the difficult cases.

Through discussions, at the end of the meeting, participants agreed the wayfoward that; the project should be scaled up and the sensitization to be extended to different staff. Also proper selection and staff involvement at each institute, Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology should be closely involved as well as basic requirements should be clearly guided.

Telemedicine is a relatively new development in the health sector whereby modern communication technology enables doctors in rural areas to call in the help of specialized doctors in larger, academic hospitals to give the right diagnose and to decide upon the right course of treatment.Telemedicine is one the outcomes of the advances in communication technologies. It is an innovation in the medical sector which enables the communication and sharing of medical information electronically over distance.
